Biography/History

Henry C. Friend was born on March 30, 1909 and died on June 28, 1995 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1934 and joined his father Charles’s law practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was an activist in environmental issues and ecology, especially when it came to the pollution in the Milwaukee River. Friend was active in the Milwaukee Rowing Club serving as president from 1957 to 1982. He also advocated the benefits of the sport of rowing in the local community and schools.

Scope and Content Note

The Henry C. Friend collection spans the years 1952 to 1988 and contains four series: Conveyance, Milwaukee River, Milwaukee Rowing Club and Miscellaneous. The first series, Conveyance, contains correspondence regarding Milwaukee River Parkway construction and UWM/East Side-North Shore Area Transit Improvement project, and some notes by Mr. Friend regarding the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. Also included are minutes and correspondence from the Mayor’s Beautification Committee. The second series, Milwaukee River, contains mostly correspondence pertaining to clean-up of the Milwaukee River; correspondence and documents regarding public parks along the Milwaukee River and some various State of Wisconsin memoranda and reports. The third series, Milwaukee Rowing Club, contains correspondence and materials regarding club rowing equipment membership information and facility management. Also included are documents related to a fee dispute that the rowing club had against the City of Milwaukee. The Miscellaneous series consists of correspondence files, ephemera, and pamphlets of events from the Metropolitan Sewerage District of the County of Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and Citizens for a Better Environment.

The collection is arranged into the following series:

The series are arranged alphabetically. Within each series, folders are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within each folder.
