Biography/History
Charles Francis Smith was born on 21 August 1881 in Wausau, Wisconsin to Thomas L.
and Anna A. Shillcox Smith. The family moved to Milwaukee a short time later. He
married Carrie Beatrice Stair in 1907. The couple had seven children. Smith
graduated from the University of Wisconsin law school and briefly practiced law
before working at T.L. Smith Co., a company Smith's father founded. In 1915, he
became president of Smith Engineering Works, another company his father founded.
Smith later became the director of the State Bank of Milwaukee and was also active
in various clubs and organizations. He died 10 December 1951.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains correspondence between Charles F. Smith and his English
cousins, Sarah and Herbert Leigh from 1942 to 1951. The correspondence covers family
history, Smith’s vacations and health, food parcels sent to the Leighs, life in
England during and after World War II, and post-war politics. There are also
photographs of the Leighs and Charles Smith.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject, then chronologically within
each folder.
