Biography/History
The Wisconsin Council of Dance was formed in 1966. Its purpose is to promote the art
of dance. The Council encourages the formation of local dance councils, sets up
workshops for those interested in teaching dance, and plans tours for dancing. It
also helped initiate the first state teaching certification for dance in public and
private schools, which was approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public
Instruction in 1972.
Scope and Content Note
This collection consists of records from the Wisconsin Dance Council. It includes
correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and newsletters from the organization's
founding until the mid-1970s. The collection also contains materials from various
dance groups, both in Wisconsin and nationally, the Council's participation in dance
workshops, and items on the creation of a teaching certification in dance
instruction.
