Biography/History
The Young Men’s Association was organized in Milwaukee in 1847 and the group’s
membership supported a reading room and library for members. Supported by
memberships and profits from local lectures, the association became an established
institution. After the Civil War, memberships and interest waned, causing a
financial deficit. In 1878 the Young Men’s Association turned its 10,000 volume
library over to the city of Milwaukee, forming the nucleus of the Milwaukee Public
Library.
Scope and Content Note
The collection is comprised of two ledgers. The first which contains what appears to
be a membership roster and accounting of dues, both of with are organized
alphabetically although the ‘B’s through ‘R’s are missing from the roster. The back
portion of the ledger contains records for the Young Men’s Association’s library
circa 1854. The second ledger contains minutes, records of the administration and
financial statements. Some loose materials have been pasted into the ledger like
news-clippings, notes, and other statements.
Arrangement of the Materials
Ledgers are arranged chronologically.
