Biography/History

Marjorie Marks Bitker was born February 9, 1901 in New York. She graduated in 1921 from Barnard College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She also earned a Master’s degree in English Literature from Columbia University in 1922. Under her maiden name, Marks, she published short stories and poetry in publications such as The New Yorker, The American Mercury, and Parents Magazine. She also worked as an editor in the mid-1940s to the mid-1950s for Farrar, Strauss and Company, G.P. Putnam’s Sons and the David McKay Company. She married Bruno Bitker in 1957. She was active with the Friends of Wisconsin Libraries and co-founder of Bookfellows, currently known as the Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library. She had three daughters from a previous husband, Emilie, Margaret and Elizabeth; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She died July 3, 1990.
