Biography/History
Bertha Damaris Knobe was born in Franklin, Indiana, in 1869. She was the adopted
daughter of Baptist minister and humorist, Robert J. Burdette. Knobe also lived in
New York, Chicago, and California. She was a journalist who wrote on women’s rights,
suffrage, and social reform. Some of the publications she wrote for include Harper’s Weekly and the Chicago
Times-Herald. Knobe died in 1930.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of personal correspondence, photographs, and clippings.
Correspondence is from individuals such as Jane Addams, Helena Modjeska, Dorothy
Dix, Art Young, Leon Dabo and many other noted personalities and social activists of
the early twentieth century. Photographs are of many of the same people; some are
autographed while others are unidentified.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by personal name or subject, then
chronologically within each folder.
