Biography/History
Edward S. Kerstein was a Milwaukee Journal reporter
who specialized in legal and court issues. He was born in 1911 on Milwaukee’s south
side, the tenth of twelve children. His father was a Polish immigrant and violin
maker. Kerstein graduated from Marquette University in 1934 with a B.A. in
Journalism. He served as editor for the Marquette University annual, The Hilltop, and was also managing editor of the
university student newspaper The Tribune. He joined
the Milwaukee Journal staff in 1935 as a police
reporter and retired from the Journal in 1976.
Kerstein died in 2004 at the age of 93.
Scope and Content Note
Collection consists of a complete manuscript of Kerstein’s biography of Daniel Hoan,
Milwaukee's All-American Mayor: Portrait of Daniel
Webster Hoan that was published in 1966. It includes typed pages, with
the author’s notes and corrections, as well as photographs. Proof sheets are also
included along with a photocopied newspaper article on the Civic Dinner honoring
Hoan at which the author was present.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject, then chronologically.
