Biography/History

Hugo J. Lange, Jr. was born February 17, 1905 in Milwaukee, WI to Hugo H. Lange and Louise Frick Lange. He also had an older brother Oscar and younger sister Laura. He graduated from Milwaukee County School of Agriculture; he also studied at Michigan State College and University of Wisconsin extension department. He joined the socialist party in 1929 and was very active locally running as a socialist for some elected positions in the early 1930s. He was appointed to City Board of Tax Review by Mayor Daniel Hoan in 1936. He married Florence Grunert Lange on August 8, 1940 in Iowa. He was a member and officer in the Technical Engineers, Architects and Draftsmen’s Union, Local 54. He later worked for many years for the Department of City Development in a variety of positions. His obituary lists him as a retired employee of International Harvester and the Department of City Development. He passed away in Milwaukee on June 19, 1991.

This is a collection of correspondence, ephemera, clippings and publications all regarding events occurring in Milwaukee’s socialist community.
