Biography/History

The Milwaukee Sewerage Commission was created by Wisconsin Statute in 1913. Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council. The Commission is responsible for the planning and construction of new sewerage systems within the city. In 1921, the Metropolitan Sewerage Commission was created to perform the same duties within the metropolitan area outside of the city limits. The two agencies link several systems into one major sewerage system. The District also provides wastewater treatment and flood management services. Today, it is governed by 11 commissioners and serves people in 28 communities, covering over 400 square miles.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains annual reports, some only cover the City and some only cover the County, but most of them cover both. They include information on the operations of the Sewerage Commission, financial statements, and summaries of engineering work. Annual reports for several years have been bound together; some years are missing. The collection also contains other various reports and publications. The sewerage certificates are listed by date in two sections: west and south. Information provided includes to whom issued, for what purpose, property description, certificate amount, and certificate number.

Arrangement of the Materials
