Scope and Contents

The papers of the La Crosse Progressive Association are not extensive but cover the years 1899-1905, with the majority dated 1901-1903. Materials include correspondence in alphabetical order by name of correspondent; goals; agreements; subscribers; supporters; and members. Financial records include assorted invoices, checks, receipts, and ledger pages dated 1901-1902. Lastly a group of ephemeral items consists of button designs, association ribbons, and tickets with a member list for an annual dinner held April 10, 1902.

Historical Note

The La Crosse Progressive Association, a community service organization like a chamber of commerce, was composed of La Crosse businessmen who paid an annual $1.00 premium. A copy of their policy lists such goals as promoting and advancing the interests of La Crosse, aiding all worthy projects that accomplish this goal, and advertising advantages of La Crosse as a center for business, manufacturing and residence. This group, whose president was John C. Burns, promoted such activities as La Crosse Interstate Fair, a brass band, and a new hotel for La Crosse.
