Abstract:
Papers and photographs of Morton B. Murphy, an officer in the United States Navy Reserve who served as a night fighter pilot on the carriers USS Saratoga and USS Monterey during World War II. The collection includes personal correspondence, military papers, veterans reunion correspondence, and photographs. The bulk of the collection are correspondence between Murphy and his wife, Alys, while he was in the service. The letters from Morton discuss military life, his time in flight school, and active service aboard aircraft carriers. Some letters mention his combat experience, such as shooting down enemy planes. Alys writes about her daily life on the home front during the war and including her studies at the University of Iowa. Military papers include flight training materials, military orders, promotion notices, and commendations and certificates. Also included is correspondence pertaining to his participation in a veterans group consisting of former members of VF-34 squadron, which he served with during the war. The photographs consist of aerial photographs of Japan, and images of naval bases, which include training barracks, airplanes, and pilots preparing for flights. Also included are a few photographs taken during a reunion with former members of his squadron.
