Abstract:
Reference collection of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society, Wisconsin Chapter, an organization that was formed by Wisconsin veterans who served in the Eight Air Force during World War II. The collection was originally organized by society members into fifty-six binders containing information taken from websites and other sources pertaining to the service and history of the Eighth Air Force during the war. There are original manuscripts and photographs, but the bulk of the collection consists of copied materials. The collection is divided into individual fighter and bomber groups as well as other units and bases that were attached to the Eight Air Force. Included is poetry written by veterans and their descendants, statistical and historical background information on the various units, mission information, commanding officers, and types of aircrafts used during the war. There are also individual reminiscences and narratives taken from news articles, journal entries, and recollections written by the veterans themselves. Wisconsin veterans found in the collection are: Donald Almon, Ed Damro, William J. Zauner, Billie Melton, Richard Higgins, Mel Ellis, John F. Schimenek, Frank A Koracin, Marcus Kolb, Willard Reese, and Lester E. Kotlan. Black and white and color photographs pertain to various units within the Eighth Air Force and include images of aircraft, the aftermath of bombing runs, and plane crashes. The personal photographs of Donald Almon and Frank Koracin are also included which depict sites visited during the war, unit photographs, and aircraft flown during the war.
