Dr. P. S. MacArthur, father of Daniel S. MacArthur, was born in Holland, New York. In 1847 he graduated from Buffalo Medical College, returning to Holland, and later Caledonia, to practice medicine before marrying Miss Mary L. Dean, and moving west to La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1855. There, four years later, Daniel S. MacArthur was born. After an elementary education in the La Crosse public schools, following in his father's lead, young MacArthur graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1881, and three years later he was valedictorian at the Rush Medical College commencement.
