Green Bay and Prairie du Chien Papers, 1774-1895

Background of the Collection

The Green Bay and Prairie du Chien papers were collected by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They came from a wide variety of sources, but mainly from the estates of Hercules M. Dousman, Henry S. Baird, Morgan L. Martin, and Louis B. Porlier. In 1906, following the archival practice of the day, the papers were bound into 99 folio volumes. Other volumes were later added to the collection. About half of the papers have been removed from their bindings in recent years, and these are now stored in archives boxes. Boxes 1-2 (Old volumes 1-4) have been microfilmed and are now available on Micro 591.
