Biography/History

Broadcaster Lester William Lindow was born in Milwaukee on April 11, 1913. He attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1934 with a degree in journalism. In 1940 Lindow joined station WFBM (AM) in Indianapolis, reportedly the nation's youngest major market station manager. During World War II he served with Army public relations in Europe. After the war he returned to become general manager of WRNY-AM- FM in Rochester, New York, following which time he became vice- president and general manager of station WFDF (AM) in Flint, Michigan. In February 1957 Lindow took a leave of absence to assist in establishing the newly-organized Association of Maximum Service Telecasters; he never returned to the Flint position. Under Lindow's guidance, the AMST, an association of owners of independent television stations that operated at maximum permitted power, became a powerful lobbying organization with regard to the number, range, and quality of television signals. Lindow retired in July 1978.
