Abstract:
Records, mainly 1982-1986, of the Public Intervenor's office concerning the controversial copper mine that Exxon proposed to construct at Crandon, Wisconsin. The company withdrew its application in 1986. The series consists of internal memoranda, correspondence, environmental impact studies, and other reports and documents on all aspects of the project. About the permitting process, there is extensive correspondence and other materials on all phases of the process which illustrate the give and take among the Departmental of Natural Resources, Exxon, the public, and the Public Intervenor's office; numerous applications submitted by Exxon; materials on the 1986 master hearing on the Crandon Mine Project including pleadings and transcripts of the testimony by the DNR and Exxon witnesses; and the texts and notes of Public Intervenor Waltraud A. Arts for a series of speeches and presentations about the Crandon Mine Project, 1985-1986. Related governmental bodies such as the Metallic Mining Council and the Mining Investment and Local Impact Board are also represented. Available only on tape is a public forum on the project in the Town of Nashville in 1985 and an unidentified recording. The collection also includes the Public Intervenor's original organizational memorandum containing the file numbers and abbreviations used for this case; the container list includes references to those original numbers.
