Abstract:
Records of a commission created by Acting Governor Martin Schreiber by Executive Order 52 on January 26, 1978 to make a comprehensive examination of the state tax system. Sometimes known as the Tax Reform Commission or the Knowles Commission because it was chaired by State Senator Robert P. Knowles, the commission's purpose was to carry out a complete reexamination of Wisconsin's personal and corporate income taxes, sales tax, inheritance tax, and property tax. It was also charged with offering recommendations for improvements. By Executive Order 5, issued on January 22, 1979 Governor Lee Dreyfus authorized operation of the Commission until March 1, 1979 so that it could complete its final report, Tax Reform Commission: Final Report.
