Wisconsin. State Department of Public Welfare. Bureau of Research and Statistics: Biannual, Annual, and Biennial Statistical Reports, 1878-1959

Scope and Content Note

Reports are present for county institutions, state psychiatric institutions, and state reform and penal institutions. One folder of GENERAL information precedes the reports.

The series of COUNTY REPORTS is arranged alphabetically by county and contains two types of reports: annual county reports and annual federal reports. Some of these reports are arranged by facilities for acute and chronic illnesses.

The County Annual Reports include information on assets, financial statements, farm reports and hospital earnings. In the annual statistical section, population movement, inmate parole and discharges, restraint and seclusion statistics are reported.

The Annual Federal Reports contain information similar to that found in the annual county reports. It also includes population statistics by year including age and mental disorder of patients upon admission and release, and information about institution staff.

The STATE PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION REPORTS are arranged alphabetically by institution. Mendota Mental Health Hospital is unique in that it also has correspondence to the State Board of Control, 1920-1928.

The Biennial Reports summarize information on cause of death, admissions, discharges, diagnoses of patients upon admittance and release, and parole and temporary discharges.

The Biannual Reports track the movement of the patient population. These reports summarize the activities of the institutions. The Mendota Mental Health Hospital reports are very detailed, and highlight the functions and accomplishments of the various departments in each county.

The Federal Reports contain statistical information requested by the Department of Commerce. The reports contain information on population movement, age, gender, mental disorder on admission, discharges by condition, deaths in hospital, and the total duration of hospital life and mental disorder.

The REFORM AND PENAL INSTITUTION series begins with a file of Wisconsin Criminal Statistic annual reports, 1921-1928. It continues with reports from prison, reformatory, and probation institutions for men, women, girls, and boys.

The Criminal Statistics contain statistical information gathered for the State Board of Control, including the movement of population and employment of prisoners in county jails, the number of persons convicted by juries of criminal offenses, the number of persons who pleaded guilty to criminal offenses, and information on probation and parole.

The Monthly Prison Reports contain information on the distribution of state prison populations by committing counties, number of felony convictions, recapitulation of previous incarcerations, marital status, race, religious affiliation, offense, and population movement statistics.

The State Prison Biannual and Biennial Reports document the number of prisoners from each county in the institution, population movement, marital status, age, education, race, occupation, religion, number of offenses, and sentence.
