Abstract:
Records of the Governor's Commission on Human Rights, created in 1945 to disseminate information and educate the people of Wisconsin to an understanding and practice of human rights, and empowered to investigate cases of alleged discrimination in public places and to seek conciliation where it believed discrimination to have occurred. The Commission could also encourage and assist local units of government in guaranteeing equal opportunity for housing. These records document the commission's broad interpretation of these duties and functions. They include minutes, correspondence, subject files, clippings, publications, films, and sound recordings. The subject files include reports, complaints, conference materials, legislative documentation, and the personal papers of the Commission's longtime director (1949-1963), Rebecca Barton. The records are organized into seven series.
