Abstract:
Vouchers, warrants, payrolls, Ward and Smith Bequest Fund certificates, ledgers, and related financial correspondence of the Soldiers' Orphans' Home that was held by the State Treasurer. The chronologically arranged vouchers document detailed expenditures and monthly salaries of employees of the home and the audited authorizations for payment. Approximately 1,000 certificates and two related volumes document disbursements from Ward and Smith Bequest Fund which was established through the philanthropy of Horatio Ward of London, England, to benefit Civil War orphans, and Caroline Smith of Chicago, which was established to aid Wisconsin' Civil War orphans. The certificates, which are arranged by number and which cover disbursements between 1875 and 1877, indicate the name of the orphan and the date when the orphan reached age 18. Also included is the soldier's name, regiment, company, and date of death. The ledger includes much the same data (although not the name of the deceased parent), together with information on fund disbursements, 1882-1894. Volume 2 is a name index to orphans who received payment during the period 1875-1883.
