Abstract:
Scrapbooks and loose photographs of the Engsberg and Schallert families of Lake Mills and Johnson Creek, Wisconsin. The majority of the collection consists of photocopied scrapbooks, 1905-1944, containing postcards received by Malinda Schallert Engsberg (1888-1976), a postcard collector, and by her sister and brother-in-law, Mattie Engsberg Crump and Harold W. Crump. Before 1920 much of the postcard correspondence was addressed to Malinda Schallert at Johnson Creek from Ralph W. Engsberg (1891-1985) of Lake Mills, a student in electrical engineering at the University of Wisconsin (1909-1914). Malinda Schallert and Ralph Engsberg married in 1920, after which they resided in Oak Park, Illinois; in 1925 they moved to Lake Mills. Their daughter Mary Engsberg, a student at the University of Wisconsin during World War II, also received many postcards. The deteriorating scrapbook was disassembled, rearranged chronologically, and photocopied by archives staff. Original Wisconsin postcards were interfiled in the archives' postcard collection (PH 2744); cards from other states were discarded; and original postcards depicting Ralph Engsberg's activities were retained. One of the photograph albums documents the life and activities of Malinda Schallert in Johnson Creek, 1909-1917; and the other consists of unidentified family portraits and snapshots. Several large prints document the Lake Mills Fire Company.
