Biography/History

Hillsboro, founded in the 19th century, was Wisconsin's largest rural African-American settlement. Flora Shivers was a celebrated member of the Hillsboro community. Shivers and her husband, Alga, came from two large Hillsboro families and were well known in the area. Alga Shivers was especially known for building round barns in the county.
