Abstract:
Forty-four engraved and etched prints, originally plates bound in De rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sueciae Rege gestis commentariorum libri Septem: Elegantissimis tabulis Aenis exornati cum triplici indice (Commentaries on the reign of King Charles Gustavus of Sweden in seven volumes), the official Swedish history of the wars between the Kingdom of Sweden against Poland and Denmark from 1655 to 1660, authored by Baron Samuel von Pufendorf, first published in 1696. Pufendorf was a noted 17th-century German historian and political philosopher. The work was illustrated with 115 pages of copper engraved plates of city views and maps. The plates depict sieges, battles, naval engagements, and views in contemporary Poland, Germany and Denmark. Many of the drawings for the plates were done by Erik Dahlbergh, an eyewitness to the battles, who served as Quarter-Master General of the Swedish Army. Noted engravers of the period provided their work also.
