Ralph L. Andreano Papers, 1963-1971

Scope and Content Note

The papers deal largely with events arising out of Andreano's publication of No Joy in Mudville and a series of newspaper and periodical articles in which he argued that a narrowing focus on strictly economic concerns was in danger of destroying America's most popular sport.

The major part of the collection is made up of materials connected with Andreano's testimony as an expert witness for the plaintiff in the 1966 case of the State of Wisconsin vs. the Milwaukee Braves, Incorporated (Case Number 332-626). The collection has been organized into two series: Papers Concerning the State of Wisconsin vs. the Milwaukee Braves, Incorporated; and Other Papers.

PAPERS CONCERNING THE STATE OF WISCONSIN VS. THE MILWAUKEE BRAVES, INCORPORATED include General Correspondence, Legal Papers and Related Materials, Papers Concerning Andreano's Testimony, and a Research File. General Correspondence contains fewer than a dozen items. Perhaps most noteworthy is the 1969 exchange between Andreano and newly appointed Commissioner of Baseball Bowie Kuhn concerning Andreano's offer to advise Kuhn's office about the needs of organized baseball. Legal Papers and Related Materials consist largely of photocopies of papers from the State of Wisconsin vs. Milwaukee Braves, Inc. trial. Numbered Exhibits contains only a few trial exhibits, some of which are double-numbered and listed under both numbers in the Digest of Exhibits. Deposition and Digests of Depositions contains Andreano's annotated copy of Commissioner of Baseball Ford Frick's deposition. Papers Concerning Andreano's Trial Testimony include a data sheet providing autobiographical information and typescripts of Andreano's planned testimony.

OTHER PAPERS pertain to Andreano's writings and to business and academic matters. In Typescripts of Andreano's Writings are outlines for two prospective books on baseball. The section on Articles and Reviews includes reviews of two of his published books. Materials Concerning Proposed Formation of Atlanta Braves Holding Company were sent to Andreano by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission as part of that body's request that he offer an expert's advice on the proposed affiliation of the Atlanta Braves and the La Salle Street Capital Corporation of Atlanta (1970). Among the Miscellaneous Papers are a letter, vita, and other materials compiled to support Andreano's appointment to the faculty of the University of Wisconsin.
