Curtis Family Papers, 1849-1881, 1945

Scope and Content Note

Papers of various members of the Curtis family of the Town of Lowville, Columbia County, Wisconsin, including:

--Miscellaneous legal papers of William Weller Curtis, relating to his terms of office as Justice of the Peace, and to the case of State of Wisconsin vs. Levi L. Soles, who was charged with threatening the life of a brother of W. W. Curtis (1850-1857).

--Papers of Charles Simeon Curtis (b. 1843, d. 1862), son of W. W. Curtis, including diaries (1861-1862) and letters written by C. S. Curtis to members of his family (1861-1862 and undated). The papers relate to Curtis' life as a University of Wisconsin student (early 1861) and to his service with the 3rd Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers, Company K, as a hospital steward in Frederick, Maryland (late 1861-early 1862) and at the front in Virginia (mid-1862). The Civil War papers contain observations on the war and comments on Curtis' superior officers. C. S. Curtis was killed in action in the Shenandoah Valley on August 9, 1862.

--Papers of Isaac Lodewick Curtis (born 1856, died 1945), last secretary of the Lowville Baptist Church, pertaining to Baptist church and temperance activities. Included are the record book of the Lowville Baptist Church, containing minutes (1849, 1855-1879) and a list of church members (1849-1881); and records of the Rocky Run Temperance Society (1878-1879 and undated).

--Miscellaneous papers, including minutes of organizational meeting, list of original members, and constitution of the Lowville Centre Debateing Society (1859); and notes on the history of the Curtis family, compiled by Ina L. Curtis (1945).
