Abstract:
Papers of William Best Hesseltine, a University of Wisconsin professor of history and scholar of the Civil War, relating to his teaching, research, and writing projects. Extensive correspondence provides insights and commentary on academic life at a major university and demonstrates the inter-relationships of the national community of historians. Among the correspondents are many scholars and former students including several of the most prominent American historians of a generation. The collection also contains papers relating to Hesseltine's work with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, the Southern Historical Association, and university committees and files from his research and writing such as notes, drafts, manuscripts, and typescripts of his books, articles, reviews, and addresses. Other papers include lectures, syllabi, reading lists, clippings, and copies of publications. A biographical file contains legal and academic records, school papers and poetry, diplomas, and biographical and bibliographic records and clippings.
