Abstract:
Papers of Albert J. O'Melia, an attorney from Rhinelander, Wisconsin, primarily concerning his political activities as an active member of the Republican Party and supporter of Thomas E. Dewey in Wisconsin's Presidential primaries during the 1940s, but also providing information on World War I and on Rhinelander civic organizations. The collection contains correspondence, speeches on civic and political subjects, Oneida County Patriotic Fund records, 1917-1922, concerning fundraising for relief work in Europe, and miscellaneous items including campaign materials from 1922 and 1940. Correspondence is mainly incoming and includes substantive correspondence from Thomas E. Dewey and Joseph McCarthy; several brief greetings from Dwight Eisenhower, Irvine Lenroot, and Wendell Willkie; and a concentration of letters concerning the 1940 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. A series of letters, 1917-1918, from W. A. Beaudette, a chaplain from Rhinelander serving on the front lines in France, contain observations on World War I events.
