Papers of Joseph Lafayette Murphy, a Lutheran minister from Tennessee, and his wife, Clara Falk, from Stoughton, Wisconsin. Included is correspondence, business documents, sermons, programs, poems, articles, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The correspondence documents the relationship between the couple before and after their 1894 marriage, as well as small town life in Wisconsin and elsewhere, and provides commentary on national political and social events of the late nineteenth century. One letter notes the lynching of a black man in Tennessee. The letters of Clara Falk Murphy include information on her work as a voice teacher. The clippings concern several controversial sermons by Murphy, including one on his views on race relations in America and the reaction of the congregation to these views. English
