Videotapes
Use Restrictions: TvB does not own copyright to the television commercials. The videorecordings are a study collection for use at the State Historical Society only. No reproductions can be made of tapes in this collection.
Arrangement of the Materials: The 415 videotapes (3/4-inch U-Matic masters) have been transferred to 93 VHS user copies. The inventory is arranged alphabetically by subject. For listings of individual commercials on each tape, see related manuscript material.
Scope and Content Note: These tapes document the development of television advertising, including both production and marketing technique: during the time period when television as a medium became a powerful force in the United States. Included are a wide variety of advertisements for various products, industries, and professions including: appliances, automobiles, department stores, farm equipment, funeral homes, furs, grocery stores, hardware and home improvement, legal services, political advertising, public utilities, and tourism. In addition, these commercials provide insight into the changing roles of women, children, minorities and ethnic groups from the 1950s through the 1980s. Commercials nominated for various advertising awards, such as the Bureau's Sales Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Clios, are also included in this collection.
