Diaries, 1852-1853, of Edward Kitchell concerning his journey from Illinois across the Great Plains in a wagon train, his gold prospecting on Rabbit Creek, California, and his school teaching and hog driving in Oregon. Included are descriptions of terrain and scenery, Pawnees and other Indians encountered, Mormons and their settlements in Utah, and comments on food, water, livestock, prices, and diseases. Also present are diaries, 1862-1864, of Kitchell's Civil War service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 98th Illinois Infantry, mainly in Tennessee, and obituaries for Mrs. John W. Kitchell and Mrs. William R. Kitchell. English
