Sweet Family Papers, 1970-1977

Scope and Content Note

The collection includes positive and negative correspondence to the Sweets (mainly from 1970-1971), including a response from Senator William Proxmire regarding Debra Sweet’s surveillance by Army Intelligence; newspaper clippings and magazine articles related to Debra Sweet's anti-war comment to President Nixon and the subsequent FBI probe; and clippings and articles about and by fellow activist Fannie Lou Hamer, including an original program for her 1977 funeral. Also included are tape recordings of related broadcasts and interviews with Debra Sweet, including one conducted by Studs Terkel, and audio recordings of Fannie Lou Hamer speaking and singing.
