Abstract:
Records of the statewide organization affiliated with the AFL-CIO, created when the Wisconsin Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Wisconsin Industrial Union Council (CIO) merged in 1958. Included are records of the merger, organizational and administrative files, and office records. The extensive records of John Schmitt, president from 1966 to 1986, include files documenting Schmitt's involvement with numerous state agency advisory committees and commissions, especially unemployment insurance and workers' compensation; various Milwaukee governmental committees and civic organizations, including Milwaukee World Festival (which produced Summerfest); and other professional organizations and public service groups with which he was involved. Also included are Secretary-Treasurer David Newby's files documenting his involvement with the Madison Community Foundation and the Wisconsin Humanities Committee, and Kenneth Clark's files on the Insurance and Banking Committee's Advisory Committee on the Uniform Consumer Credit Code.
