Abstract:
Letters and miscellaneous business papers of Harris, a resident of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., who was publisher of the first newspaper in Door County and a promoter of a canal between Sturgeon Bay and Lake Michigan. The papers contain information on land grants for railroads, lumbering, and quarrying in Door County, but primarily concern the development and financing of the Sturgeon Bay 8 Lake Michigan Ship Canal 8 Harbor Company. Letters to and from Philetus Sawyer and from Timothy O. Howe and James R. Doolittle are included as are letters Harris wrote to his wife (1866-1876) while he was secretary to Sawyer, and legal correspondence between Joseph Harris, Jr., and Jesse Birmingham (1889-1890).
