Commonwealth, Florence County, Wisconsin, Records, 1882-1961

Scope and Content Note

Clerk's record books, 1882-1961; Justice of the Peace docket, 1891-1893; Board of Health proceedings, 1885-1918; and Light and Water Commission minutes, 1934-1960. The most comprehensive documentation of the town government is found in the Board of Supervisors proceedings and Town meeting minutes sections of the Clerk's General Record Books. Other information in the Clerk's Record Books typically includes a register of orders drawn on the Town Treasurer showing order number and amount, date of issue, and purpose of payment; account of receipts and expenditures showing date and amount, by whom paid, from what account or to whom paid, and purpose; annual financial reports, register and oaths of town officers; treasurer's bonds; index of chattel mortgages; apportionment of school taxes; and descriptions of school districts in the township.

The Justice Docket records civil and criminal cases heard by Justice of the Peace Robert Mitchell. Types of cases include disorderly conduct, drunkenness, monetary disputes and numerous cases involving "houses of ill fame." Proceedings of the Board of Health are not very informative on health issues, but record the various health officers' oaths of office and terms. Water and Light Commission meeting minutes pertain to infrastructure, rates, and other financial information.
