David Clarenbach papers

Content Description

The David Clarenbach papers are primarily composed of campaign materials, newspaper clippings, artifacts, and ephemera which cover the political career of Wisconsin Assemblyman David Clarenbach.

During Clarenbach's nine terms in the Wisconsin State Legislature he was active on numerous social, environmental and public health concerns. The collection contains materials related to Clarenbachs work on the Sexual Privacy Bill, represented in various iterations including Assembly Bills 235, 323, and 514, from 1977-1981. Collection materials also address Clarenbachs work on Gay Rights legislation, represented by Assembly Bill 209 which prohibited discrimination in housing, Senate Bill 498 which removed sexual preference as a barrier to licensure and public employment, and Assembly Bill 70 which prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation, the first such bill adopted by any state in the United States.

In addition, the collection contains materials related to Clarenbach's advocacy for public school students, opposition to nuclear power plant expansion, cannabis decriminalization, university student representation on the Board of Regents, collective bargaining rights for graduate students and university staff, and public health efforts to care for people living with AIDS and prevent further spread.

The Collection also includes artifacts and ephemera including Clarenbach's campaign materials, t-shirts, buttons, stickers, pamphlets, invitations for fundraisers, and mailings sent to supporters and constituents as well as endorsements from labor organizations and assorted personal materials.
