Abstract:
This collection comprises the papers of Philip P. Cohen, a professor in the UW-Madison Medical School's department of physiological chemistry (of which he served as chairman from 1948-1975) and acting dean of UW's medical school from 1961-1963. Specifically, the collection contains Cohen's correspondence with colleagues, graduate students, and university administrators, symposia and conference materials, along with Cohen's lab notebooks and working drafts of his research on the human metabolism. From Cohen's work as a university administrator, the collection also includes press clippings, correspondence, and meeting minutes related to social and political developments at the university (e.g., the TAA Strike (1970) and the anti-Dow protest (1967)). This collection also includes Cohen's correspondence, notebooks, itineraries, and other materials related to his travels to and work in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Japan, China, Cuba, and other countries, documentation about his work in the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), along with news clippings, correspondence with U.S. senators, and petitions connected to the National Cancer Act (1971.)
