Leo Tiefenthaler Papers, 1862-1976

Biography/History

Leo Tiefenthaler was born in Milwaukee to Pancratius and Clara Tiefenthaler in 1880. Tiefenthaler taught elementary school for several years before earning his master's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin. He returned to Milwaukee in 1911 where he served as municipal reference librarian. Tiefenthaler became civic secretary of the City Club of Milwaukee in 1917, a post he held for over fifty years. The City Club was founded in 1908 to oversee local government. A believer in good government, Tiefenthaler attended various City and County meetings and was active in overseeing their budgets. He died in 1974.
