Abstract:
Records of the City Club of Milwaukee (Wisconsin), a civic organization formed to study and promote better social, civic, and economic conditions. Minutes, correspondence, subject files, scrapbooks, and photographs document the club's activities. The bulk of the collection consists of background materials collected by study groups on many civic topics, including public finance, city and regional planning, transportation, public education, and health and social services. Also included are the personal papers of the club's civic secretary from 1917 to 1974, Leo Tiefenthaler, and files on the Outdoor Life Group and the Milwaukee Civic Alliance. Among the civic projects in which the club was involved are consolidation of city and county government, annexation of adjoining areas, establishment of the pay-as-you-go principle for financing public improvements, opposition to repeated attempts to introduce political considerations into school administration through school board representation by districts rather than at-large, enactment of the county civil service commission, defense of civil service principles, passage of the drivers' license law, and advocacy of Milwaukee's scientific street lighting, street naming, house numbering, and playground systems.
