Abstract:
Minutes of the Additional Court (created by an 1823 act of Congress for Brown, Crawford, and Michilmackinac counties, Michigan Territory) when seated in Prairie du Chien and Mineral Point. This court had concurrent civil and criminal jurisdiction with the Michigan Territory Supreme Court and was conducted by Judges James Doty (1824-32) and David Irvin (1832-36). Records include: copies of Doty's and Irvin's letters of appointment; decisions on the granting of tavern and ferry permits; naturalization oaths; and trial records. Trial records include names of plaintiffs, defendants, petit and grand jurors, and attorneys; charges; motions; and verdicts. Crimes include murder, assault, fornication, adultery, illegal sale of liquor and army uniforms, larceny, contempt of court, and trespassing. A copy of a letter from Michigan Territorial Governor Lewis Bass giving Judge Doty permission to try several Winnebago Indians indicted for murder is also included.
