Physical Description: 6.2 c.f. (13 archives boxes and 1 flat box) and 2 reels of microfilm (35mm)
Scope and Content Note

The records of the Superior Chamber of Commerce (1903-1977) consist of six series: ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS, RETAIL DIVISION, COMMITTEE RECORDS, SUBJECT FILES, FINANCIAL RECORDS, and PUBLICATIONS. The records consist of materials documenting the current Superior Chamber of Commerce and its antecedents, the Superior Association of Commerce and the original Superior Chamber of Commerce.

The bulk of the collection documents the period from 1965 to 1975. In particular, the records in the series COMMITTEE RECORDS and SUBJECT FILES provide detailed information for this period. Nearly the only documentation of the early history of the organization is located in the ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS. Of particular note are the minutes of the original Superior Chamber of Commerce, the organization that evolved into a business association, dated from March 1903 to September 1967. The remainder of the collection consists of records of the Superior Association of Commerce and the subsequent Superior Chamber of Commerce.

The series ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS (1903-1977) consist of articles of incorporation and by-laws, minutes, annual meeting materials, correspondence, and other materials. The bulk of the series consists of minutes documenting the Superior Association of Commerce. The annual meeting materials consist of programs and papers documenting preparation for the meetings. Other materials in the series include policy manuals, membership and officer lists, and an organization chart. The minutes and articles of incorporation documenting the Superior Chamber of Commerce, which later relinquished its charter to the Superior Association of Commerce, are also included in the series.

The RETAIL DIVISION series (1965-1975) is comprised of calendars of sales events, minutes, financial statements, and documentation of special promotions. Materials include committee rosters, minutes, correspondence, financial information on promotions, press releases, and newsclippings. Promotions documented include Christmas, Fourth of July, Moonlight Madness, and Ridiculous Days.

The series COMMITTEE RECORDS (1946-1975) consists of records of both standing and ad hoc committees of the Superior Chamber of Commerce. The majority of the committees concern community development. The series is arranged alphabetically by committee name. Within the individual committee files, arrangement follows the order given: committee rosters, minutes, correspondence, subject files, and news releases and clippings. The bulk of the series documents the period 1965 to 1975.

The SUBJECT FILES series (1887-1902; 1912; 1946-1976) consists of files apparently maintained by the office staff of the Superior Chamber of Commerce. The bulk of the series documents the period from 1965 to 1975 and includes correspondence, circulars, and newsclippings. Examples of the topics documented in the series are economic statistics, publication of a “Superior, Wisconsin” booklet, St. Lawrence Seaway development, and Wonderful Wisconsin Week. Of particular note is the file “East End Unification, 1967” which provides some documentation of the cessation of the original Superior Chamber of Commerce's chamber activities and the surrender of its charter and name to the Association of Commerce.

The series FINANCIAL RECORDS (1957-1977) contains several types of financial records including audit reports, accounting reports, general ledgers, tax forms, and a cash receipts and disbursements journal. A small amount of financial correspondence is also included.

The PUBLICATIONS series (1942-1977) contains a nearly complete collection of the bulletins published by the Superior Association of Commerce and the later Superior Chamber of Commerce. The bulletins span the period from July 1949 to May 1977. Also included in the series are the maps and brochures published by the Chamber, as well as the published reports prepared by the organization.
