Abstract:

Papers of Elizabeth Sutherland Martinez, editor of the book Letters from Mississippi (1965) which concerned the civil rights activities of Freedom Summer and particularly the COFO voter registration drive. Present are editorial correspondence, letters from volunteers, research material, drafts, and promotional material relating to the book.

1925, December 12	Born in Washington, D.C.
1946	Graduated from Swarthmore College.
1947-1952	Worked as a researcher on African problems for the United Nations.
1956-1958	Served as administrative assistant in the Photography Department of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
1958-1964	Employed on the staff of Simon and Schuster, where she edited The Negro Revolution in America and The Movement. During this period she also published in a variety of magazines.
1964	Became Books and Arts Editor for The Nation, and during that summer spent over a month in Mississippi talking with volunteers in the COFO voter registration project.
1965	Published Letters From Mississippi. The Mississippi Parents Project Committee sponsored this book and got 150 of the 800 volunteers to contribute the letters written during the project to their parents and friends.
1965	Joined the staff of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as administrative secretary of the New York Office.

The papers, 1964-1966, relate exclusively to her book Letters From Mississippi and include editorial correspondence, letters and biographical information on about forty of the volunteers, news releases, drafts, and promotional material. Many of the original letters of the volunteers are missing or were so heavily edited that they could not be reconstructed in their original state. Two successive draft versions and additional cuts are arranged by chapter.
