Scope and Content Note

General

The Bayfield County Naturalization Records, 1859 - 1945, consist of an Index to Citizenship, Declarations of Intention, Petitions, Certificates, and ancillary records.

For preservation purposes, some volumes were dismantled and placed in boxes, however the original system of numbering volumes was retained since the index is keyed to the original system. For these volumes, the container list gives the volume number in parentheses ( ) for identification purposes, and the box and reel number for location purposes. Volume numbers in brackets [ ] were assigned by the Archives.

Almost all the records in this series are available both in original paper form and on microfilm.

Records

Researchers should begin by consulting the INDEX. Entries are alphabetical by the initial letter of the last name, and thereunder chronological by the date the Certificate was filed. Entries index Declarations, Petitions, and Certificates.

The DECLARATIONS OF INTENTION date 1859-1945 and are arranged chronologically. Each volume contains an index. Note that Volume 11 was not microfilmed so researchers should refer to the original volume.

The PETITIONS FOR CITIZENSHIP date 1884-1945 and are arranged by filing date. Each volume contains an index.

CERTIFICATES for the years 1903-1906 are filed with their respective petitions (Volumes 3 through 5). After 1906 the certificates are filed separately (Box 6).

ANCILLARY RECORDS consist of one folder of Orders Granting and Denying Petitions, 1929-1945 (no index); one folder of Repatriations, 1940-1941, including an index; and one folder of Depositions, circa 1922-1940. Note that the Depositions were not microfilmed so researchers should refer to the original documents.
