Papers largely reflect the professional career of archivist Timothy L. Ericson. The bulk of the collection is comprised of his correspondence, research and subject files, and files created during consultancies and advisory service.

Timothy L. Ericson (1947-) earned degrees in history and library and information science from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (UWRF) and University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), and began a career as an archivist at UWRF in 1974. He was named director of the Area Research Center at UWRF in 1980, and from 1984 to 1986 he worked as a project archivist at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, now the Wisconsin Historical Society. In 1986 Ericson became the education officer of the Society of American Archivists and held that position until 1989, when he moved to the UW-Milwaukee (UWM) Libraries. There he headed the Archives and Area Research Center, as well as taught archival education in an adjunct capacity for many years. In 2003, he retired from the UWM Libraries as assistant director for Archives and Special Collections, and became coordinator of archival studies at UWM's School of Information Studies until his retirement in 2004.

Ericson is also heavily involved in the Society of American Archivists, most notably serving as the interim executive director from 1990-1991, the chair of the Executive Director Search Committee from 2000-2002, and as vice president/president from 2002-2004. He was named a fellow of the Society in 1991. Ericson was also associated with Midwest Archives Conference, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the Association of Canadian Archivists, and the Western Archives Institute. He served as the governor's appointee to the Wisconsin Historical Records Advisory Board from 1989-2003 and was the recipient of the (Wisconsin) Governor's Archives Award for Archival Advocacy in 2004.

Papers consist mainly of Ericson's professional working papers, although there are some items of personal interest as well. They are organized into five series. Consultancy files document his various consultancies and advisory work. Correspondence files reflect his professional activities as well as his mentoring relationships with students and colleagues. Personal materials include documentation of Ericson's early archival career, humor, photographs, and some record of his service with the National Guard in Wisconsin. Publications are a sampling of published works including editorials, letters, and articles. Research and subject files include material regarding archival transfer networks in the United States, and presentations and talks given by Ericson between 1977 and 2004. Wisconsin Historical Records Advisory Board (WHRAB) files represent his work with that Board between the years of 1978-2004.

The Ericson Papers do not contain significant record of his work with the Society of American Archivists (SAA) or the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), and researchers should consult related collections for this documentation.
