Biography/History
By 1952, the Milwaukee State Teachers College's Publicity Department had become the News
Bureau, and in 1953 the name changed again to the News Services Office. After the creation
of UWM, the Office of News Services was created in 1957 and later placed under the authority
of the Assistant Chancellor of University Relations. It was called News Service (1957-1970),
News and Publications (1971-1977), Office of News Services (1978-1986), News Services and
Publications (1987-1999), and University Communications & Media Relations
(2000-present). The office produces news articles, publications, web content and marketing
materials on university events, people, achievements, and priorities. Publications include
UWM Report (1978-2014), UWM
Today (1988-2013), and Kenwood (1983-1988).
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of photographic prints, negatives, slides, and digital images
pertaining to the activities of UWM and its predecessors compiled or created by University
Communications & Media Relations. The majority of the photographs were taken during the
daily activities of publishing the UWM Report and UWM Today (the magazine of the UWM Alumni Association, renamed
UWM Alumni in 2013). The photographs primarily provide a
record of achievements by faculty, staff, and alumni as well as record special events and
programs held at the university.
The collection documents university communications regarding such topics as UWM buildings,
administrative changes, student activities, athletics, campus events, minority student
groups, faculty and student research, alumni accomplishments, and the university's
involvement in world affairs. It includes photographs of prominent visitors to campus from
1988 to 2014, including politicians, academics, and authors; photographs of campus
buildings; portraits of accomplished faculty members, students, and alumni; snapshots of
daily life and student activities on campus, including the arts, athletic events, and
commencement ceremonies; and photographs of activities of senior officials from the UWM
administration.

Series: 2. Subject Files, circa 1900-2011 : Series 2 covers a variety of topics relating to campus life from circa 1900 to 2011.
Highlights of the series include photographs of historic theaters in the Milwaukee

during the 1960s and 1970s, through the dedication of the Zelazo Center for the
Performing Arts in 2002. Images include those of prominent political figures who
visited campus, including George W. Bush, and 2004 Democratic primary presidential
hopefuls Dennis Kucinich and Howard Dean. Also included are photographs of
commencement from 2004 to 2011, American Indian Awareness Days 2004, Pantherfest from
2003 to 2005, UWM events at Miller Park from circa 2004 to 2010, and some men's and
women's basketball games from 2003 to 2006.
