Scope and Content Note: A manuscript copy of Charles Lewis's journal, October 10-December 27, 1755. Lewis (circa 1696-1770), a resident of Fredericksburg, Virginia, recorded his service under Andrew Lewis and George Washington during the march to Fort Cumberland to defend the frontier against the Indians. His entries include a list of Washington's officers, descriptions of settlements ravaged by Indian raids, of floggings meted out to recaptured deserters, and of the observance of Christmas festivities.
