Biography/History
Circus parades were a well-known tradition throughout Milwaukee. In 1963, Circus
World's first director Charles P. "Chappie" Fox and Ben Barkin, an ad man whose firm
served Milwaukee's Schlitz Brewery, started the tradition by organizing the first
circus parade that would be held in downtown Milwaukee. Throughout the years, the
parade was famous for restored circus wagons, exotic animals, and men and women
dressed in costumes representing a variety of cultures over time. In 1985, the
circus parade was renamed The Great Circus Parade. The last parade was in 2009.
Scope and Content Note
The Circus World Parade Collection contains 68 Anscochrome slides dating from 1964.
The slides illustrate the first circus parade that took place in downtown Milwaukee
and include depictions of restored circus bandwagons as they make their way down the
parade route. The slides also show close-up shots of the various wagons and the
intricate detail that went into their restoration. The exotic animals and performers
dressed in ornate costumes are also present.
Arrangement of the Materials
The original order of the collection was non-existent and was therefore arranged by
subject topic by the processor. Twenty-one slides were numbered ranging from 3-36
and were printed on the back. These numbers did not indicate that an original order
was still possible to maintain. However, the slides in each container are numbered
in order based on those original numbers in order to keep consistency among the
other containers in the collection.
