Abstract:

Records of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) is an organization of colon and rectal surgeons and related health care physicians dedicated to quality patient care through research and the education of its physicians and public. The official records of the organization date to its founding in 1899 as The American Proctologic Society and include works of its early members and correspondence regarding the ongoing challenge of education and change in the organization.

The American Proctologic Society was founded on June 7, 1899 in Columbus, Ohio. The American Board of Proctology changed to the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons on September 16, 1960. After years of deliberation, The American Proctologic Society made their final name change to The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Research Foundation received its tax exempt status on October 31, 1962. In 1996 there was a merging of the two organizations and the research foundation began operating as an affiliate of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons but continues to function autonomously.

The majority of the records fall into one of six series: American Proctologic Society, Annual Meeting, Committee, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, Executive Council, and History. The American Proctologic Society includes Transactions beginning in 1899 that include papers and research from its members and Research Foundation material and other correspondence. The Annual Meeting series includes minutes, photographs, program guides, and registration material. Under the Committee heading are the various groups within the organization and their correspondence and related materials pertaining to the growth and maintenance of the organization. Diseases of the Colon and Rectum is the official journal of the ASCRS, and there is a nearly complete run of the journal in the archives. Executive Council includes meeting minutes beginning in 1940. The History series includes extensive information on the founders, growth of the organization, the long struggle for name change, and research and education. In addition to these series the collection also contains newsletters, constitution and by-laws, information on other national and international medical organizations, education and fellowship and publications related to the field of proctology and the practice of medicine in general.

The files are organized alphabetically by subject, then chronologically. Throughout the files, there are cross references between names of individuals, organizations, and topics. The SEE ALSO reference refers to related folders elsewhere in the collection. The SEE reference provides the proper folder heading to examine.

The ASCRS transferred the initial part of the collection to the Archives in 2005 and continues to add materials to the collection.
