Abstract:
Papers and photographs of Charles W. Cory, a conscientious objector during World War I who went overseas after the war with the American Friends Service Committee to help rebuild war-torn France. The collection includes papers that focus on Cory's pursuit of conscientious objector status during World War I, and his service in that capacity at Camp Devens, Massachusetts. Flyers and information bulletins directed toward Quakers give advice on filing for objector status, and letters that clergy wrote to support Cory's status can be found within the sub-series. A diary kept by Cory during his time building houses in France in 1919 describes the destruction left over from the war and the international efforts to rebuild. Two photo albums complement the diary by giving a visual component to his written description of the efforts in France. Two plans show the shape and construction of the houses that Cory and his associates built. Other documents in the collection are two letters written by Cory to his future wife, Olive Taylor, and a passenger list from his return trip to the United States.
