Abstract:
Papers of Edwin J. Gross, a Progressive politician and lawyer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Gross was a supporter of Robert M. La Follette, a political ally and personal friend of Irvine L. Lenroot, and manager of Wendell L. Willkie's Wisconsin campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 1944. The collection includes selected political corrrespondence received by Gross, some speeches made by him prior to 1921, reports and notes on the Republican national conventions of 1916 and 1920, a typescript of his proposed book entitled “A Political Grab-bag,” and four volumes of newspaper clippings relating to his career. Prominent correspondents include Amos Pinchot, Lenroot, and La Follette as well as many other political figures.

Biography/History

Edwin J. Gross (1881-1956) was born in Columbus, Nebraska to Herman and Lucy (Schram) Gross. Edwin Gross was educated in the Milwaukee public schools and the University of Wisconsin Law School from which he graduated in 1901.

Gross was active in Milwaukee political affairs for over forty years. He delivered his first political speech in 1902 in behalf of the Republican Party and continued to take an interest in either Republican or Progressive Party affairs until 1944. Gross was a supporter of Robert M. La Follette Sr. until La Follette's death in 1925. Gross was also a political ally and close personal friend of Irvine L. Lenroot and managed several of Lenroot's campaigns throughout the state, but particularly in Milwaukee County. In 1944 Gross managed Wendell L. Willkie's campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination in Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of correspondence, 1902-1944; speeches, 1902-1920; a report and notes on the Republican National Conventions of 1916 and 1920; the typescript of a proposed book, “A Political Grab-bag”; and four volumes of newspaper clippings relating to Gross's career.

Note

Many of the letters were published in the Milwaukee Journal, June 30 through July 7, 1956.
