Abstract:
Correspondence and legal and business records of Potter, Wisconsin congressman, 1857-1863, and consul general to the British Provinces in North America, 1863-1866. Correspondence is informative on political matters of the pre-Civil War and Civil War periods; abolitionism and national politics; the Kansas constitutions; the proposed acquisition of Cuba; the difficulty of electing a speaker of the House in 1859; Virginian Roger Pryor's challenge of Potter to a duel; the investigation of the loyalty of federal employees by a House committee, 1861-1862; and distribution of patronage among Wisconsin Republicans. A number of letters written to Potter as consul general at Montreal and an exchange with C.A. Bronson of La Crosse, Wisconsin, concerning the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States are also included. Among Potter's correspondents were Simon Cameron, Salmon P. Chase, James D. Doty, James Kendall, Rufus King, Carl Schurz, William H. Seward, Caleb Smith, Charles Sumner, and C.C. Washburn.
